Plant: Perennial herb growing up to 50 cm high.
Stem/s: Erect or ascending, much branched at the base, tetragonal, purplish, densely covered with a mixed of non-glandular, curly or spreading white hairs.
Leaves: Opposite, simple, ovate or triangular-ovate, covered with spreading or adpressed white hairs on both surfaces, petiolate, margins shallowly serrate or serrate-crenate, apex obtuse, base truncate or nearly cordate, petiole purplish, canaliculated above, densely hairy; margins and the lower surface tinged purplish with age.
Flowers: Zygomorphic and hermaphrodite, in elongated, many-flowered racemes, solitary at each bract and rather crowded at apex; bracts lanceolate or ovate; pedicels densely hairy, too short, apparently sessile; calyx densely hairy, with 2 conspicuous and entire lips, the upper erect, slightly bending towards, convex, shield-like, crimson, covered with short adpressed or spreading whitish hairs, the lower tubular at first, becoming campanulate later, rim entire, crimson, with longer whitish hairs distinctly exserted the tube; corolla crimson, densely covered with glandular and non- glandular hairs externally, tube curved upwards near base; upper lip erect, narrow, hood-like, bending towards, emarginated at apex, lower lip with a distinct whitish-yellow, undulate blotch at the center of the median lobe, lateral lobes fused with the upper lip at the base; stamens 4, slightly exserted under the upper lip of corolla; ovary superior, glabrous, style 1, stigma 1.
Flowering time: April-June.
Fruit: Hairy ovoid nutlets.
Habitat: Rare endemic to Cyprus and it is found on rocky slopes, steam banks, roadsides, on calcareous or igneous ground, from 400-1150 m alt.
Native: Endemic to Cyprus.
