Cakile maritima subsp. maritima is annual or biennial plant growing to 40cm tall.  Stem ascending to erect or spreading, occasionally prostrate, much branched, nearly cylindrical, glabrous, green when young, pinkish later.  Leaves alternate, simple, petiolate, irregularly lobed, lobes 3-9, linear, simple, entire, sparsely toothed, fleshy and glabrous.  Flowers hermaphrodite, actinomorphic, terminal, in corymbs on the main stem or on the lateral ones; petals 4, whitish mauve or white, obovate, apex rounded, rarely emarginate reduced to a purplish claw at base, glabrous; sepals 4, erect, greenish to purplish, apex acute, subacute or obtuse, glabrous; stamens 6, 4 long and 2 short, filaments free, greenish, glabrous, anthers yellow; ovary superior; style erect, greenish, stigma, capitate, small.  Flowering time February – October.  Fruit is an articulate, 2-parted, 2-seeded, indehiscent and fleshy siligue; upper part much longer, bullet-like, ovoid, apex narrow; fruit and stalk are green becoming gradually pinkish with age.  Common plant in Cyprus, on sandy places near coasts.
